Traumatic injury can devastate the overall wellbeing of a patient, affecting not only physical health but also mental, emotional, and social aspects of their life. Whereas American College of Surgeons guidelines include screening and addressing mental health recovery in trauma centers, many trauma centers do not monitor and address emotional recovery, making it a priority to learn how to implement evidence-informed behavioral health programs in trauma centers. In this presentation, we will delve into a comprehensive review of the most effective strategies for managing behavioral health concerns post-injury. Special emphasis will be placed on the importance of implementing robust PTSD screening protocols and establishing seamless referral processes to ensure individuals receive timely and appropriate care. Furthermore, we will explore a compelling program example highlighting the successful integration of behavioral health initiatives within trauma centers, showcasing how such integration can optimize patient outcomes and enhance overall recovery experiences.
