STN Mentor Program

The STN Engagement Committee offers a mentoring program, Mentor Match, for members seeking advice and guidance from more seasoned peers. There is an abundance of experience within STN from the bedside to the highest level of administration. Mentees will be matched with Mentors with experience in their current role.

Mentor Match is designed to foster the meaningful exchange of ideas and knowledge transfer that will enhance individual skills and advance STN’s mission to ensure the highest level of trauma care across the continuum.

The program is available to all members in good standing. Mentors should have a minimum of 3 years of experience in their position. The mentor and mentee will determine the specific expectations and timeframe for the relationship to ensure both individuals benefit from the program.

General Information

  • What is Mentor Match?
    Mentor Match is a mentorship program offered by STN and organized by the STN Engagement Committee. Mentees will be matched with mentors whose experience and expertise match areas in which they wish to be mentored. Mentor/Mentee matches will be made on a quarterly basis.
  • Is there a fee associated with using Mentor Match?
    Mentor Match is a benefit of membership and is available only to members. There is no extra charge to use this resource.
  • How are Mentors and Mentees matched?
    Members of the STN Engagement Committee will match mentors and mentees based on information provided.

For Mentors

  • How do I become a Mentor?
    If you are a member, click here to enroll as a Mentor.
  • Do I have to be an expert in my position to be a Mentor?
    No, mentors are not expected to be experts but have at least 3 years of experience in a role. Your experience will be valuable to someone new to the same role.
  • Who are the Mentees?
    Mentees are other members who need your help support their careers.
  • Can I have more than one Mentee?
    While there is no limit to the number of mentoring relationships you can establish, we recommend that you be judicious in the number of people you are mentoring to ensure you are able to devote adequate time to each mentee.
  • How do I find Mentees?
    Once you have enrolled as a Mentor, you will be notified via email if you have been matched with a mentee.
  • Is it okay to reject a match?
    Yes. We understand that there may be a conflict of interest that we are unaware of between you and the mentee. Acceptance or rejection of the match must occur within 2 weeks of notification.
  • What if I’m going to be on vacation or unavailable for a period of time?
    It is your responsibility to communicate your availability to your existing Mentees.
  • How do I end a mentoring relationship?
    If the mentoring relationship is complete, you will notify the STN Engagement Committee. If the mentoring relationship isn't working out, please kindly discuss your decision to end the relationship with your Mentee. You will also need to notify the STN Engagement Committee.
  • What are the expectations for participating Mentors?
    We expect that you will fulfill your commitment to develop at least one mentoring relationship. We expect you to meet at least monthly with your Mentees, and that you communicate with your Mentees as agreed upon by both you and your Mentees.
  • How much time will I need to invest as a Mentor?
    We recommend that you and your Mentees agree on a schedule that works best for both of you. You should meet at least monthly. The most important thing is to discuss your mutual expectations about time and communication at the start of your relationship. Keep in mind that mentoring doesn’t necessarily require large amounts of your time. Even brief phone calls or e-mail exchanges with you can make a big difference to your Mentees.
  • What benefits do I receive from the organization if I participate as a Mentor in the program?

For Mentees

  • How do I become a Mentee?
    If you are a member, click here to enroll as a Mentee.
  • Who are the Mentors?
    Mentors are members who have volunteered their time to support other members' careers.
  • Can I have more than one Mentor?
    Mentees will be matched with one mentor. If you would like to be matched with more than 1 mentor, you would need to communicate this with the STN Engagement Committee. While there is no limit to the number of mentoring relationships you can establish, we recommend that you be judicious in the number of Mentors that you have. Please keep in mind that Mentors have limited time to offer and may have other Mentoring relationships.
  • How do I find a Mentor?
    Once you have enrolled as a Mentee, you will be notified via email if you have been matched with a mentor.
  • What if the Mentor isn’t the right “fit” for my needs?
    Sometimes, regardless of the information provided, Mentors and Mentees don’t always "fit." If this happens, we suggest that you discuss your decision honestly and kindly with your Mentor; thank them for their time and request a new Mentor from the STN Engagement Committee.
  • Where can I meet with my Mentor?
    It is up to you and your Mentor to decide how, when and where you want to pursue your mentoring relationship. It is likely that most of your communication will occur by video conference, phone or electronically.
  • How long does the mentoring relationship last?
    We recommend that you and your Mentor agree on a schedule that works best for both of you. The most important thing is to discuss your mutual expectations about time and communication at the start of your relationship.
