PTACC

The Pediatric Trauma Across the Care Continuum (PTACC) course is an essential educational program designed specifically for nurses who provide care to pediatric patients admitted with trauma-related injuries. Recognizing a critical gap in education for this specialized group, the PTACC course has been thoughtfully crafted to address the unique challenges and complexities associated with pediatric trauma care.

The curriculum encompasses a variety of modules that delve into key topics relevant to pediatric trauma, including:

  • Trauma Assessment: Understanding how to effectively assess the unique physiological and psychological needs of pediatric trauma patients.
  • Shock: Identifying the different types of shock that can occur in children and the appropriate management strategies.
  • Abdominal Trauma: Exploring the mechanisms of injury, assessment techniques, and management protocols for abdominal injuries in children.
  • Head and Spine Trauma: Focusing on the specific considerations and interventions necessary for head and spinal injuries in pediatric patients.
  • Musculoskeletal Injuries: Addressing the assessment and management of fractures and other musculoskeletal injuries in children.
  • Thoracic Trauma: Learning how to recognize and treat thoracic injuries, including those affecting the lungs and chest wall.
  • Facial, Neck, and Eye Injuries: Examining the unique challenges of managing trauma in these sensitive areas, including potential complications.
  • Burns: Understanding the classification, treatment, and long-term care considerations for pediatric burn injuries.
  • Physical Abuse: Training on recognizing the signs of physical abuse and understanding the protocols for reporting and intervention.

In addition to the comprehensive content, the PTACC course includes hands-on rotating skill stations where participants can practice vital skills such as wound vacuum-assisted closure (VAC), cervical collar application, and chest tube insertion. This practical component enhances the learning experience, allowing nurses to gain confidence and proficiency in critical procedures.
